Confidence is being able to say “Fuck you, I’m the shit” without opening your mouth, say it with your walk, with your smile, say it with your entire being.

Scientists discover most relaxing tune ever

Sound therapists and Manchester band Marconi Union compiled the song. Scientists played it to 40 women and found it to be more effective at helping them relax than songs by Enya, Mozart and Coldplay.

Weightless works by using specific rhythms, tones, frequencies and intervals to relax the listener. A continuous rhythm of 60 BPM causes the brainwaves and heart rate to synchronise with the rhythm: a process known as ‘entrainment’. Low underlying bass tones relax the listener and a low whooshing sound with a trance-like quality takes the listener into an even deeper state of calm.

This came at the appropriate time.

There are most definitely some things that are wrong with this, but as an American and a Christian, as well as someone who attended a Christian high school I want to go on the record and say that not all of them are like this and I think it’s disgusting that people think this is disgusting. It’s what they believe and maybe it’s not the same as what you believe but it’s their right to believe in that.

At public school I was taught about all of the millions of years and I disagreed with a lot of what was taught because of what I believed and they made me take tests and study it, is that disgusting now? Try to look at the other side for a second please?

When I have kids some day I plan in teaching them about evolution and everything else that science preaches as well as what the Bible says, they will make their decisions. Until then it’s disgusting to call people disgusting for what they believe, no matter what it is. GROW UP!

A lot of people feel it is disgusting because this is an example of teachers outright denying what is scientifically proven information.

They can say “this is what we believe, and this is what everyone else believes,” but that is the disgusting part.  It’s not just a belief taken on faith, it is scientifically proven facts.  Stuff that was hypothesized, tested, and tested again, and again, and again, by many many many different groups of people.  And a lot of hypotheses were proven to be wrong in the search for what we can say we know to be right.

Some religious people argue “teach the debate, teach the different beliefs of each community,” but there is no debate to be had until religion brings more evidence to the table than the accounts of a few ancient people.  Science has hundreds of people and well-documented evidence on our side.  We can proudly, and with good reason, declare that we are right, and this is true.

And I’m not talking like origins of the universe, or how the dinosaurs got there (although we’re pretty damn sure about those too), we just want people to know that it is absolutely true that the Earth is billions of years old, and absolutely true that dinosaurs existed millions of years ago, for a much longer period of time than humans have existed so far.  It is disgusting to me that young children are purposefully taught the exact opposite, for whatever reason.

And I can’t even say “well, at least that school is paying taxes”

I understand that point of view. I am currently studying the sciences at a private Christian college actually. The problem with what you’re saying is that as a Christian I believe that God created the Earth. The actual age of the Earth is not mine to determine. You may be right that dinosaurs may have existed before the flood. It may also be true that God created the world as an aged world. There is that possibility.

I also want to point out that many Christians aren’t looking for a science versus religion debate. Because it isn’t a debate in my opinion. You can’t prove science with religion and you can’t prove the Bible with science. That’s just how it is. I dot need to bring more evidence to the table because what I believe, I believe on faith and that is the beauty of it all.

The problem isn’t that teachers are refusing to teach scientifically “proven” facts. Because if you haven’t ward science can still be wrong on occasion. But that they aren’t teaching what the secular world wants them to be teaching. They are a private school, or at least I’m assuming as much, and are allowed to teach what they want to teach.

So, as I said I’m not looking for you to convert me and I’m not really looking to convert you or anyone else. I just feel that the other point of view should have a voice.

But thank you very much for your reply. I’m always up for a good philosophical discussion.

I’d rather that school tell young children the age of Earth is not Man’s to determine.  At least that’s technically not false, it’s an opinion.  Because you’re right, science is fallible.  But particular things are tested so much that they can be regarded as true, with like 99.9999% certainty.

I also assume it’s a private school.  I think what gets me in the end is that they’re not being taught anything other than what their parents want them to be taught.  I’m fine with a grown adult going to a Christian College, like you, and choosing for themselves what to study and believe.  I’d rather have an adult tell me that science is fallible and has an agenda, than be told that by a 9 year old.  It’s just going to be rough for any of those kids if they grow up and decide to study science at a secular school.  They’ll have a lot of unlearning to do.

Any school that takes away potential students from being interested in science disgusts me equally.  In my state, a curious girl was expelled from high school for seeing what would happen when she mixed common cleaning chemicals in a bottle at her school (it made smoke).  Now she can wave goodbye to a good education, and that’s one less scientist in our future.  Same for private schools that don’t teach science.  The science community thrives in greater numbers, because that’s just more people challenging the claims of others and testing them, it’s more accuracy of our claims of what is and isn’t true.

tl;dr: Certain Private schools are taking opportunities from potential future scientists.

And thank you for the civilized discussion, sorry if I was a bit heated the first reply, it was like 5am and I was up all night, basically I was grumpy and on tumblr for some reason.

I absolutely agree with you. Science does thrive in larger numbers. But we also need to challenge science. And even if we can see that some things have been proven correct time and time again it doesn’t mean that’s where we stop.

Also, I want to make note that this post shows one quiz taken by one student. It’s not really a thorough view of this particular schools curriculum and I don’t think it’s fair to say that they aren’t teaching science to the extent that may be necessary.

And I definitely get the point about turning students away from science. Again I went to a private Christian boarding school and the only college recruits that came in were from the college that teaches strictly ministry for my church body. It was rather discouraging.

I am actually really passionate about this topic and helping to amend the relationship between the scientific community and religion, especially Christianity. I think both sides make too many assumptions and generalizations. It’s very frustrating.

Also, another point…(sorry, I have a lot to say) I think that in the case of the school only teaching what the parents want them to teach, isn’t that why private schools exist? To cater to specific needs of certain groups of people and what they want taught to their children? I think it’s also what the parents see as what is best for their child(ren).

Some people take their children away from public school for the reason you’re addressing. They don’t want their children taught something that they see as wrong. Whether that be Creation and a shorter age of the Earth or the billions of years.

Okay, I need to be done for now. I could go on for days. And I didn’t take your post in a hostile way, I actually really appreciated the response. It’s nice to have honest conversations about this with someone who sees the other perspective. So thank you.
